Scrapyards are an important part of the Community in Lancaster County!

Date

Sahd Metal Recycling has been blessed to serve the Lancaster County community and their metal recycling needs for over 83 years in Columbia! We have recycled countless pounds of aluminum, stainless steel, copper, brass and steel scrap metal from residents and commercial and manufacturing operations and we have built our community one customer at a time!

Part of that relationship is formed by being active out in the community and inviting our community into the yard to see the process up close and personal! Just this month we are co-hosting America Recycles Day 2025 with LCSWMA on Friday November . We have been long-time partners with Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority and we often say residents can recycle almost anything when you combine the efforts of our two organizations! Much like our annual Earth Day celebration, we offer bonus pricing on aluminum can recycling, tours of the scrap metal with the big material handlers and shears and a whoopie pie treat to celebrate! LCSWMA will be on hand to educate our community on recycling batteries, the Big 4 and the innovative Waste to Energy process which has helped Lancaster County to a 51% recycling rate!

We are big believers in getting kids from the community to get into our yard because you never know what career exploration it will inspire. Students from Penn Manor, Hempfield, Garden Spot in New Holland, Ephrata, Leola and many other school districts have organized tours of our yard and we have taught them about some of the various disciplines that they would need to master to work here. Chemistry to understand alloys and acceptable limits of elements in foundry worthy scrap which pays at a higher rate than mill scrap metal. Finance and Economics to understand the metal prices and what moves the Fed makes that can impact them. Science to understand sustainability as a field and the purpose of waste diversion and recycling. Teachers and students are very surprised how much information is needed to run a recycling facility!

As much as our door is always open to have visitors we love to go out into the community as well! Our industry is the END and the BEGINNING of the manufacturing supply chain–and many people are surprised by that fact. We drop rolloff containers at facilities where they put in obsolete scrap metal, drops from laser tables and saw cutoffs and scrap metal of all kinds. We then process that metal and prepare it for foundries and mills to remelt and make new products out of! Because we are so tied to this community, we have built specialized manufacturing, fabricating and commercial recycling programs. Whether a facility is selling us production scrap, or upgrading machinery in their facility, replacing overhead HVAC units and getting a rigger to haul out the metal we have programs to meet their needs. Everything we do offers upfront scrap metal formula pricing and a 24 hour turn around guarantee for service.

Our sponsorship of this community and presence in fabricating, manufacturing and industry is unmatched in this area. Our team will be sponsoring a booth at MX 2025, the biggest Manufacturing Expo in the area this Wednesday! Next week we will be sponsoring a booth at the SME Local Chapter 22 Year End Event which will show aspiring students many opportunities in the fields of manufacturing and industry they may not have otherwise considered.

As a partner in the community of course we sponsor the local teams and charitable organizations with funds and involvement–we believe it is our responsibility to be a strong community partner. As we head into the holiday season and such a time of need for our community we are proud to sponsor the 2025 Water Street Rescue Mission Food Drive, with the goal of collecting 80,000 pounds of food as a community. We sponsor the drive and also serve as a collection site for the community.

This is just a small sampling of what makes us excited to be a partner in recycling in this Lancaster County community. We have a year long schedule of events and causes we support, and professional and associations with the High Center, Lancaster Chamber, Northern Lancaster Chamber, Lancaster EDC, Columbia EDC and many other partners in our community. Because doing business in a community requires us to be an active partner in the community we take the responsibility seriously and know that the only way we will last another 83 years will be due to the partnership we create with our community!
